King Abdullah unveils King Saud University’s Gazal-1, the first Saudi car
June 15, 2010 – King Abdullah hosted a large contingent from King Saud University (KSU) and the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) yesterday in his Jeddah palace for the unveiling Gazal-1, the first car to be engineered and manufactured by Saudis.
The creation of Gazal-1 is one of King Saud University’s most ambitious projects to date, and developed by a team of KSU student-engineers, who designed the car with the unique and diverse terrain of the Arab Peninsula in mind.
Ghazal-1, which is 4.8 meters (16 feet) long and 1.9 (6 feet) meters wide, has been patented by KSU and all intellectual property rights are in the University’s name. It is estimated that 20,000 cars will be produced per year.

Hayakum, a week-long orientation program (30 Aug-6 Sept) will introduce the students to all aspects of academic and social life of the campus that would help them to navigate the university.

Ali Abdullah Isa, a student from the Department of Chemistry at the University of Bahrain (UoB) College of Science has been chosen for a training course at the laboratories of Dow Corning Silicon (DCS) in Belgium during July.
Isa was singled out after interviewing 15 students contesting this opportunity. The Head of the Department, Dr. Awatef Mahdi, pointed out that the DCS’s selection of Isa indicated nothing but his competence he had showed during the interviews, accurate information he possessed in the field of chemistry, his ability to communicate information as well as his interpersonal communication skills. Mahdi congratulated Isa on the occasion, expressing the College’s pride of its students, who locally and internationally represent the UoB.

Zayed University launched the 2009 Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) report on entrepreneurship in the United Arab Emirates which was prepared by Zayed University experts in collaboration with Khalifa Fund for Enterprise Development and Mohammed Bin Rashid Establishment for Small and Medium Enterprises (SME). The GEM report was created with the objective to collect relevant harmonized data on an annual basis from different countries and to bring together academics from all over the world to work on a common research program. 42 countries are participating in this research activity and this is the third participation for the UAE.

10/07/2010: Microsoft Co. announced last Thursday that KFUPM Students Team took second place globally in this world’s premier student technology competition, thus becoming the first Arab nation team to win the prize in this annual global competition. The event was hosted by the Company in Warsaw, Poland.
KFUPM team reached the final round after being nominated in the first round of the competetion in which 340 teams took part in April 2010. In the second round, Microsoft adjudged KFUPM Team as one of the best six teams besides Brazil, Singapore, Serbia and Taiwan to compete in the final round that took place in Poland last Thursday.
